Cameras in Parliament: More Security, Less Profanity

The Armenian government has allocated 4.6 million AMD (US$115,000) to install closed-circuit television cameras throughout the National Assembly, justifying the expenditure as as ‘security enhancement.

Each unit cost 31,000 AMD (US $76).

It seems that the cameras have had an unintended impact other than raising the level of security.

I overheard one deputy advising a colleague to watch his language. “Be careful, the camera is recording us,” he said in muffled tones.

Now, perhaps, MPs known for their crude and expletive riddled literary outburst will think twice before speaking.

The installation will take several months to complete.
