Vardan Petrosyan: Armenian Politics Akin to Prostitute-Client Relations

On the eve of the premier of his film Սեռասարսափ (very loosely translated as "Sex Terror"), satirist/comic Vardan Petrosyan equated the relations today between the government and the people with those that arise between a prostitute and a prospective client or "john".

At least that's how Armenia's domestic political situation will be allegorically portaryaed in his film.

It revolves around the main protagonist, a prostitute, and her childish crush on a businessman.

The two meet by accident and during the course of the film are transformed – the former becomes the government and the latter, the people.

Petrosyan confides that as far back as 2008 he held out hopes that the government and the political opposition would sit down and dialog, and that jointly the two sides would be able to meet the challenges facing the nation.

"Now, there are many who believe that such dialog will not change anything. I sincerely believe that Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Serzh Sargsyan are intelligent guys and savvy enough to see what is happening. I just can't believe that they aren't preoccupied with finding resolutions to our problems."

The actor said the film was mainly targeted to the youth in Armenia.

"Today, the young generation feels left out. Times have changed so much that a grandfather and grandson are not on the same wavelength at all. There's even a disconnect between older and younger brothers. They have different values and heroes."

Petrosyan noted that the serious issues of tomorrow remain unanswered since an environment in which the younger generation can develop is not being created in Armenia.
