"Hrazdan"Market Vendors Continue Their Strike

The striking "Hrazdan" market vendors continued their protest action into a second day in front of the Government Building in central Yerevan. The vendors are demanding that their stall fees be cut in half, from the 225,000 drams they are presently paying on a monthly basis to at least 100,000. "The fees are quite steep and we can't conduct business in this way. If we don't get want we want, we won't work," exclaimed vendor Gevorg. He was the only one who agreed to give his name. "People are afraid to give out their names because management will take away their rights to sell here," Gevorg stated. Alexander Ghazaryan, who heads the pre-screening unit for the acceptance of citizen's complaints at the government office, stated that since the market is a private concern the government could only act as a mediator in the dispute. "If, by law, our fees are based on the amount of trade we do let them ask for payment in accordance with those figures. If there's such a law on the books it should be respected, And if there's no business why should we pay at all," asked another nameless vendor. The strikers said they would be continue with their protest tomorrow as well.
