Recount Ordered for 8/05 Polling Precinct

Due to numerous reports of vote fraud in the May 31 Yerevan municipal elections, the RoA Special Investigative Service will conduct a recount of ballots cast in the 8/05 polling precinct. The recount will take place at 2:00 pm today. The General Prosecutor's Office sates that all interested parties, the press, monitoring groups, and representatives of political parties, can be present at the public recount. On June 1, Norayr Yeghiazaryan, a member of the 8/05 District Electoral Commission, was arrested on charges of voter fraud. also taken into custody on the same day was Armen Ohanian, a citizen who cast a vote at the polling station. "168 Zham" reporter Armineh Avetyan has claimed that Mr. Yeghiazaryan took the commission stamp and ran into the toilet with it. He was followed into the men's room by 23 year-old Vardan Hovhannisyan, a nephew of Deputy Samvel Aleksanyan (nicknamed Lfik Samo). A few minutes later, commission president Petros Avetisyan appeared on the scene and feigning anger removed them from the toilet. About thirty minutes later, Vardan Hovhannisyan attempted to stuff the ballot box with a pile of ballots. Members of the press and Transparency International representative Sona Ayvazyan prevented him from doing so. Mr. Hovhannisyan tried to offer them a bribe so that they leave the polling station for a short time.
