Nikol Pashinyan in "High Spirits"; Awaits Court Ruling

The hearing regarding whether or not to sentence opposition leader and "Haykakan Zhamanak" chief editor Nikol Pashinyan to pre-trial detention continued today at the Kentron and Nork-Marash District Court, Judge Edik Avetisyan presiding. Mr. Pashinyan's lawyer, Artur Grigoryan, stated that the Kentron and Nork-Marash Court of First Instance sentenced the editor to detention on February 26, 2008, arguing that Mr. Pashinyan was wanted by law enforcement at the time. Mr. Grigoryan stated that since Mr. Pashinyan had turned himself in to law enforcement that argument no longer holds water and that his client should not be kept in custody. The lawyer added that his client was in high spirits. Judge Avetisyan has retired to chambers and will announce his decision within the hour.
