As Next U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Matthew Bryza's Statements are to be Expected

29_07-k_bekaryanAt a press conference held today, Karen Bekaryan, who heads the "Europe Integration" NGO, stated that Armenia can still benefit from the fact that Turkey is in reality only making it appear that it is serious about improving relations with Yerevan. "Armenia will face the same situation it did when the normalization process began, but with one additional important factor that can't be overlooked. Armenia will have shown the world that despite all the obstacles, it has attempted to follow the path of normalization. On the other hand, when the other side responds with contempt to these Armenian attempts, Turkey will lose any possibility in the international arena of presenting itself as a sincere mediator in say the Karabakh conflict settlement," Mr. Bekaryan stated. He argued that while Turkey needs relations with Armenia, it is trying to gone down that road while at the same time maximizing its interests, both foreign and domestic. When asked by reporters why the Minsk Group U.S. Co-chair Matthew Bryza is always quoting the statements of Azerbaijani President Aliyev regarding the liberated territories and never refers to the pronouncements of Armenian President Sargsyan regarding the status of the NKR, Mr. Bekaryan responded, "If Matthew Bryza was in line to be appointed the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, all his statements would be based on official Yerevan pronouncements." He added that, "But the man already sees himself as one day working in Azerbaijan and is trying to build a favorable base there." Mr. Bekaryan noted that President Aliyev had created the impression in the international community that "he has a difficult time when working with his society and that he needs help". From time to time, the role of "helper from the sidelines" is assumed by various diplomats from different nations. Lately, that role has been filled by Matthew Bryza, soon to be appointed U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan.
