Belarus Ambassador Visits Syunik WW II Veterans

berllarus-ambassador_9.09.0Stefan Sukhorenko, the Belarus Ambassador to Armenia, has traveled to Syunik to bestow medals to 22 Syunik WW II veterans who participated in the liberation of Belarus from Nazi occupation. Four of the veterans were present at a reception held at the Syunik Regional Administration. Two of the medals, specially commissioned by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, were awarded posthumously to the vets.

The Armenian veterans thanked Ambassador Sukhorenko for remembering their war service and reminisced about their time on the battlefield. The Kapan Municipality also awarded the veterans with presents at the reception held in their honor. Today, Ambassador Sukhorenko, on the last day of his two day visit to the region, also paid a visit to Deno Gold Mining in Kapan and suggested to the director that the mining company purchase "Belaz" dump trucks from Belarus. Deno Assistant Director Ron Mobli noted that the company had been negatively impacted by the economic crisis and that he didn’t see the company making such large expenditures at the moment. The ambassador responded that the Belarus company was even ready to hand over the trucks on a loan basis, but Mr. Mobli turned down the offer anyways. Ambassador Sukhorenko had no other options up his sleeve so he left Deno Gold after expressing the hope that the economic crisis would quickly end. Later on today, Ambassador Sukhorenko also visited the copper-molybdenum mining operations ion Agarak and Zangezour. Before doing so, however, the ambassador will fulfill his mission and hand out medals to the remaining war veterans.
