Aragatzotn Officials Promise Accessibility to Hetq

29_10-tsutsapexkYesterday, a group of "Hetq" reporters went to the village of Ohanavan to speak with the local mayor. It seems that residents have been complaining about the potable water situation in the village as well as the problems they face in selling their apple crop. When we arrived, Mayor Nshan Misakyan wasn’t in his office. Neither was the deputy mayor nor any other municipal employees for that matter. The office seemed deserted except for one woman who immediately got in touch with the mayor by phone. The woman refused to answer any questions. Leaving the building, I walked towards a group of men in the village square passing the time of day by playing backgammon. Out of the blue, a man quickly strode up and ordered the men don’t to answer any of our questions. One of the men in the group pulled me over to one side and said, "My friend, no good will come from them. Please keep your distance from us. Let me wine and dine you and then put you pn your way. Just don’t write down anything that I might say." Taking the advice of the man who approached us, the villagers said nothing to us, feigning ignorance. The secretary of the village administration of neighboring Karbi also refused to answer any of our questions and told us that the mayor was sick and home recuperating. 20_06-S-HovsepyanSince "Hetq" reporters have had little success in getting the village mayors in Aragatzotn Marz to speak with us, we went to see Siraznik Hovsepyan, who heads the Division of Local Self-Governance at the regional administration. Mr. Hovsepyan promised to discuss the matter with all the community mayors in the near future. "I’ll raise the matter with the mayors and direct them to be forthcoming with visiting reporters and to work more transparently, especially with you guys from "Hetq" since the paper frequently covers local problems in Aragatzotn. We should be on better working terms," said Mr. Hovsepyan. Let’s wait and see if he keeps his promise and holds to the direction laid out numerous times by Aragatzotn Regional Governor Sargis Sahakyan to usher in a new era of open government.
