Richard Giragosian - Armenian Armed Forces Preparing for Tomorrow

richard-kirakosyan-2Richard Giragosian, Director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies, stated today that the greatest threat facing the ceasefire in Karabakh was the growing level of Azerbaijani-Russian cooperation. Mr. Giragosian, during an earlier press conference, noted two internal developments taking place within Azerbaijan that could threaten the peace. The first were the efforts of Baku to launch a satellite and the purchase of military aircraft from China. The second, and more realistic threat, was the warming of relations between Baku and Moscow. Mr. Giragosian stated that Armenia’s military preparedness was still superior to that of Azerbaijan, but he cautioned that the resumption of hostilities was still a possibility. He stated that a small incident on the ceasefire line could signal the start of something much bigger. The political analyst stated that Azerbaijan lagged 10—12 years behind in terms of military preparedness for the resumption of all out war. “Luckily, Armenian armed forces are already getting ready for tomorrow,” he said.
