Murder Trial Postponed; Defense Attorney a No-Show

22-12_S.-SargsyanThe trial of a young man implicated in the beating death of Tigran Tadevosyan ealier this April has been postponed till sometime in 2010. The victim died in hospital after being in an unconscious state for ten days. Samvel Sargsyan is one of four young men who allegedly attacked and brutally beat the young Tadevosyan for insulting a girl they knew over a social chat network. The other three perpetrators are still on the run from the police. The trial was supposed to get underway on December 10 at the Shirak Regional Court, but Anna Davtyan, the attorney for plaintiff, requested an additional week’s time to get acquainted with the case. On December 21, the trial was postponed once again, this time as a result of the motion made by defense attorney Tamara Yayloyan. She argued that she needed time to visit her client, Samvel Sargsyan, in jail and explain the ins and outs of an “accelerated” trial. Sargsyan had earlier requested such information. Judge Edward Manukyan argued that such an explanation would only require five minutes and not the one week requested by the attorney. He finally relented however and ordered a one hour recess. When the court reconvened, defense attorney Yayloyan never reappeared and her cell phone had been shut off. Not being able to ascertain her whereabouts, the judge stated that he would reschedule a court date in 2010.
