Police Chief Claims He Apologized to Reporter for Beating

Today, Yerevan Police Chief Nerses Nazaryan said that he had personally apologized to journalist Gohar Veziryan, in the name of the Yerevan Police Department, and that the "Chorrord Ishkhanutyun" newspaper reporter accepted the apology. Chief Nazaryan made the claim at a press conference today where reporters asked why was it that members of the police sometimes push and shove old women at rallies and other public events, and even strike reporters. Reporters then gave the example of Veziryan, who was hit by police when covering an opposition protest march back in October, 2007. Chief Nazaryan singled out the incident involving Veziryan and said that he had asked for the reporter’s forgiveness. The assemble reporters then stated that it wasn’t enough for the chief to merely express regret over such behaviour but to discipline those officers responsible. Journalists pointed out that not only had the two officers in question not been disciplines but that they were subsequently promoted. In response, Chief Nazaryan repeated that all such incidents of police brutality, whether the victims are reporters or anyone else, are to be condemned.
