MP Safaryan:Both Nations Would Prefer Collapse of Protocols

Speaking at a press conference today regarding the on again, off again, Turkish-Armenian normalization process, Heritage Party MP Stepan Safaryan offered three possible future scenarios. MP Safaryan said the first scenario would be the collapse of the ratification process of the Turkish-Armenian protocols, something, he added, that both governments would prefer to happen.MP Safaryan said that each government would like the other to be the first to pull out of the ratification process and that Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan’s recent remarks are an attempt to incite Yerevan into doing just that. The second scenario he mentioned was that the process would be ‘frozen’ which, according to the MP, is less preferable for Armenia. "The positions of both countries are more or less similar regarding this scenario but the interests are different. It would appear that Armenia finds the current situation somewhat conducive while there are international pressures being brought to bear on Turkey linked to the Genocide issue," Safaryan stated. The third scenario would be the ratification of the protocols by both nations. "This is the least desirable for both parties," he added. Sitting across the table was Republican Party MP Karen Avagyan, who argued that President Sargsyan’s statements prove that the Armenian side is conducting a constructive foreign policy. "The debate and passage of various resolutions regarding the Armenian Genocide and pressures directed against Turkey are proof of this constructive policy," said MP Avagyan.
