Environmentalists Call for Shift Away From Mining to Save Armenia's Forests
On April 28, at 5pm, the newly formed civic organization "Teghut for the Generations" will be holding a reception where alternative development schemes for Teghut and other forested areas of Armenia will be presented to the public. The reception, organized with the help of the "Save Teghut Coalition" will take place at the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center at 1 Charents Street.
Organizers argue that the mining sector, touted as one of Armenia’s most profitable sectors, is actually doing major harm to the environment and the long-term health of local residents. The environmentalists also state that there alternative program, which focuses on developing agriculture, will create more jobs than the mining sector and will go a long way to preserve Armenia’s open spaces.
