Opponents of Foreign Language Schools Gather Outside Parliament

A crowd started to gather outside the National Assembly in Yerevan early this morning to await the outcome of a vote after the hearing of a draft bill that would amend the RoA "Language Law" to permit the opening of foreign language schools in the country. The vote is scheduled for 5 pm. Armen Hovhannisyan, who heads a group opposed to such schools told Hetq that any such modifications should be stricken from the bill and not even discussed. When asked by Hetq what he and other opponents would do if the bill passes, Mr. Hovhannisyan said that they would seek to prevent any planned for hearings on the bill. "We do not need any such discussions. What we need are hearings regarding the quality of public education and the language. We need to assemble the top experts and academicians and hear their views. The society at large must then decide how to proceed and improve things." As MP’s started to arrive at the parliament, the protestors welcomed them with cat-calls and cries of "Shame", "Use Armenian in Armenia" and "Ashotyan Resign" (a reference to the Education Minister). Most of the arriving MP’s hurried into the building. Heritage Party MP’s approached the demonstrators and promised that they would vote against the bill. ARF MP’s also made their way to the crowd. MP Lilit Galstyan was seen wearing the Armenian letter "Ayb" on her lapel; it is the emblem of those who oppose foreign language schools.
