A "Hot" Political Summer in Armenia, Says Hnchak Party Leader

Lyudmila Sargsyan, who heads the Social Democrat Hnchak Party in Armenia, said that the political opposition in Armenia will change its strategy for realizing regime change in the country only after all possible constitutional avenues have been exhausted. "I still believe that our people are capable of raising their voices in protest and to force the regime to call for early elections," she said, adding that such elections would likely take place this autumn. Thje Hnchak Chairwoman said that the party preferred early presidential elections but that parliamentary elections might also take place. She argued that the summer would be a time of intense political action and that the government would be hard-pressed to let its guard down. The small Hnchak Party in Armenia is part of the HAK opposition coalition. Chairwoman Sargsyan said the HAK might also call for impromptu rallies and demonstrations if the situation called for such events. She also didn’t rule out the possibility that the HAK, lead by Armenia’s First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, and the ARF might eventually collaborate since both organizations have called for regime change in Armenia and classified it as the top priority facing the nation.
