President Saakashvili – “Javakhk Armenians are happy”

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili was recently in Paris where he spoke about democratic developments in Post-Soviet territories. After his talk at the Paris Political Science Institute, he was asked by representatives of the "Nor Seround" organization about the situation of national minorities in southern Georgian, in particular the Armenians of Samtskhe-Javakhk, and the fact that various international organizations (the UN Human Rights Committee, European Council, etc) have reported discriminatory policies being conducted by the Georgian authorities. In response, President Saakashvili is reported to have said that he wasn’t aware of such critical reports by any European organization and that such charges were incorrect. "I have never heard of a serious organization leveling such charges against us." He went on to say that Armenians in the region were quite happy and that 88% of them had voted for him in the last presidential election and that 87% had voted for his party during the latest round of local elections. President Saakashvil then urged "Nor Seround" to dump any such reports into the waste bin.
