Armenia's "Hidden" Psychologically Impaired

Based on international studies, on average, 10% of a given country’s population suffers from some sort of psychological illness. Psychiatrist Harutyun Minasyan said today that according to this finding, there should be 350,000 people in Armenia experiencing mental health problems. However, only 34,000 are registered at Armenia’s various psychological clinics. Today, at a press conference, he asked where the rest were hiding. "The rest have either never sought assistance, are under private care, or are being treated by alternative practitioners like fortune tellers and the like. Many do not even realize they need help," he said. Mr. Minasyan also said that addiction to tobacco is the leading psychological disorder in Armenia today but that it isn’t regarded as such. He also noted the Armenian addiction to coffee as a disorder requiring psychological intervention. He added that in developed nations, where such disorders are diagnosed early on, the official numbers of those with psychological problems is high. In less developed nations, where such disorders are not recognized, the numbers are proportionately lower.
