Voting for Law on Language Tomorrow

The National Assembly will vote tomorrow on the proposal to make amendments to the laws on language and school education.  Vahan Hovhannisyan, head of the ARF (Dashnaktsutyun) parliamentary faction informed protesters gathered outside the session of Parliament of this development and said the following, "They have made concessions on the number of schools – there will be a private school each in Dilijan and Jermuk, where the medium of instruction will be a foreign language from the 7th grade onwards.  They made a concession that there would only be 9 schools in the regions, through contracts, and no schools in Yerevan.  But we demanded that they remove the clauses about 'exceptions' from the law on language.  If they do this, we can then sit down and negotiate; they haven't accepted this as yet." He assured protesters that the ARF would vote against the changes during the first reading tomorrow and said, "The Speaker of the National Assembly has promised that even if the proposal is passed after the first reading, there will be discussions in the future and new changes can be introduced.  This is what we have managed to achieve at this point and we will continue to do all we can."
