Glendale Mayor - Most Armenians Arrested for Financial Crimes, Not Murder

Ara Najarian, Mayor of the California town of Glendale, said today that most of the Armenians in its city jails have been arrested for financial crimes and not for murder or assault. Mayor Najarian, now visiting Armenia, said that most incarcerated Armenians are thpose that have recently migrated to the United States. He said that the new immigrants, facing financial hardships, do not want to wait and work for 15-20 years to get the big houses and fancy cars enjoyed by those Armenians who came before; members of the older Armenian community. He said that many of the newly arrived Armenians are vulnerable in this sense and that they are fall in with the "wrong crowd" and commit illegal transactions Mayor Najarian said he had no accurate estimates as to how many Armenians were in Glendale jails but that the percentage wasn’t higher than other ethnic groups. Glendale has a population of 250,000 and that 100,000 are of Armenian extraction.
