Cassation Court Postpones Teghut Trial; Judge Offers No Explanation

Today, the RoA Court of Cassation postponed the trial pitting the Ecodar environmental NGO against the Armenian Copper Programme (ACP) and the Armenian government. Ecodar had filed a suit with the Cassation Court demanding that it overturn a decision by the Administrative Court that had rejected its original suit that worked by halted on construction of a copper and molybdenum mine in the Teghut forest. Presiding Judge Slava Sargsyan did not explain why the trial was being postponed. Attorney Hayk Aloumyan, representing Ecodar, told reporters later that the move wasn’t "within the bounds of the law." The attorney also pointed out that Judge Sargsyan was apparently not all that familiar with the case, assertions to the contrary. Mr. Aloumyan said the judge misspoke on several occasions when naming the interested parties to the case. For instance he said Armenian Copper Progress instead of Programme and Ecador instead of Ecodar. Another environmental NGO, Ecolur, says that these delays can most likely be traced to the fact that the Arhaus Convention Compliance Committee will be reviewing the matter this September.
