Slovak Armenian Community Leader Critical of Armenia's Artsakh Policy

Armenia must take lead regarding international recognition Ashot Grigoryan, President of the European Forum of Armenian Unions, seemed to crticize the policy of Armenia regarding the recognition of Artsakh, when he declared that "Our analysis shows that it is possible that several countries are ready to recognize Artsakh." Mr. Grigoryan, who also heads the Armenian community of Slovakia, went on to say that in his opinion it was incumbent on Armenia to take the lead on the recognition issue so that others would follow. He noted that the Forum basically campaigns for Artsakh recognition in countries that highly cherish Christian values and which are ready to defend Artsakh and its independence as a frontline component against the Muslim advance. Mr. Grigoryan lamented the fact that many European institutions, including the Vatican, were unaware of the role played by Armenia, and particularly Artsakh in this struggle. "People who travel to Artsakh with me, like the Slovak Prime Minister and First President of the Parliament, will return to Slovakia and state that the frontlines of the Christian-Muslim divide pass through Armenia and Artsakh," he commented. Mr. Grigoryan said that just like European historically sold out Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany in the hope of avoiding war, it appears the same Europeans believe they can shut their eyes regarding Artsakh and avoid a larger conflagration again. He said that if war threatens Europe, the danger lies in Artsakh. He concluded by saying the Armenian government must do much more to campaign for the international recognition of Artsakh’s independence. If the Armenian Foreign Ministry doesn’t ratchet up its lobbying, he said the department should shut its doors since it would be senseless to spend more money on it.
