Foreign Language School Opponent – “Armenian must become a viable 21st century language”

At a press conference today in Yerevan, Armen Hovhannisyan, a member of the "Stop Foreign Language Schools" civil action group, welcomed the initiative of the "Ayb" Educational Foundation that plans to bring the best international textbooks to Armenia for translation into Armenian and publication. "We should not shut ourselves from the rest of the world but rather gather the best and brightest of international practice and then "Armenianize" and localize it," Mr. Hovhannisyan said.

He went on to say that the aim of his and similar groups was to "artificially" establish Armenian as a viable and developing language in the 21st century. "This is exactly what our forbearers did in the 5th century and when the Mkhitarian Brotherhood accomplished in the 18th and 19th centuries. I don’t think it was easier to accomplish then as compared to today when he have a formal government and greater resources at hand," Mr Hovhannisyan said.
