Armenian Parliament Passes Controversial Language Bill

By a vote of 69 to 1, the Armenian National Assembly today passed two controversial bills that would make modifications to the "Language Law" and the "Public Education Law". Many in Armenia regard the bills as a threat to Armenian language instruction in the country. The only opposing vote came from independent MP Viktor Dallakyan. Aram Apatyan, a member of a civic organization that had fought against passage of the bill, told Hetq that Heritage Party and ARF MP’s did not participate in the vote in the hope that a parliamentary quorum would not be reached. The bill passed on the second hearing.
