Gegham Baghdasaryan - No Independent Media in Artsakh

Today, Analyticon Chief Editor Gegham Baghdasaryan said that there was no independent media in Artsakh. "There is not one reporter in Artsakh today that is pressured. Nor is freedom of speech pressured. Why? First, it is because there is no such freedom of speech existing to be quashed. Second, there’s a large amount of indifference when it comes to the issue," argued Baghdasaryan.

The editor said that the last ten years or so have been positive for Artsakh reporters since there has been no real pressure brought to bear. He said there were reporters who criticize the authorities but that their writings have no real outlet and that most articles appear in the press in Armenia and the occasional Artsakh news websites. Mr. Baghdasaryan doesn’t believe the conditions exist in Artsakh for the establishment of an independent mass media sector. He says that what’s needed are conditions supporting free competition in the economic and political spheres. When asked by Hetq if such conditions actually existed in Armenia and why many Artsakh reporters prefer to work in Armenia, Mr. Baghdasaryan answered that while the mass media was definitely monitored by the RA government there still existed a slight spectrum of variety, especially in the print media.
