Raffi Hovannisian Holds Press Conference in Opera Square

Calls for review of opposition’s strategy regarding “regime change” To mark the 7th day of his “Fast for Freedom”, Heritage Party founder and MP Raffi Hovannisian held a press conference in Opera Square and called for Armenia’s   opposition forces to rise above petty partisan politics and forge a popular movement to get the country back on track towards democratization and the rule of justice.

Looking a bit gaunt, MP Hovannisian first extended thanks to the thousands of well-wishers who have visited him in Opera Square to lend their moral support or merely to vent their frustration at the lack of positive civil and political change in the country. Raffi Hovannisian then read out a platform of 15 issues to summarize his concept forward for Armenia. As he read out the list, young activists unfurled posters behind him, spelling out the goals in black and white. In a word, Armenia’s first Foreign Minister called for a return of government power to the people and declared that it is time for Armenia’s political “leaders” of the opposition to be guided by the people and not the other way round; this seemed to be a veiled jab at the top down approach taken by the HAK (Armenian National Congress) nominally lead by Levon Ter-Petrosyan. MP Hovannisian did not say when he might consider ending his hunger strike, which was specifically set off by the recent agreement signed by the three coalition ruling parties to back the candidacy of current President Serzh Sargsyan in the 2013 presidential elections. The main thrust of MP Hovannisian’s words was that the people are the sole guarantors of peace and prosperity in Armenia. He said that the popular movement for change would invariably pick up steam in the coming months.
