Levon Aronian Moves Up to 2nd Place in FIDE World Candidates Tournament

Taking place in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansiysk yesterday was round 4 of the FIDE World Candidates Tournament, which was successful for Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian.

Playing white, Aronian got the advantage over Russia's Peter Svidler and improved his position in the tournament, moving up to second place from third in the last round.  

The results in the other matches were as follows: Shakhriyar Mamedyarov beat Dmitry Andreikin (1-0); Sergey Karjakin and Veselin Topalov tied (0.5-0.5); as did Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik (0.5-0.5).

After four rounds, Anand continues to remain in the lead, having 3 points, while Aronian and Kramnik share second place with 2.5 points each; Topalov and Svidler have 2 points each; Karjakin and Mamedyarov, 1.5 points each; and finally, Anreikin rounds out the list with 1 point.

Competing in round 5 today are the following pairings: Kramnik–Aronian, Svidler–Topalov, Andreikin–Anand, and Karjakin–Mamedyarov. 

Recall, eight of the world's top grandmasters are competing for the right to throw down the gauntlet to the reigning world champion, Magnus Carlsen.
