On the Russification of Armenia

By Edgar Vardanyan

It's obvious that Armenia is becoming increasingly more dependent on Russia.

Not yet having entered the Customs Union, the Republic of Armenia has become the only country in the post-Soviet space (and one of the rare countries in the world) that supports the Russian Federation unconditionally.

Current relations between Armenia and Russia are such as, for example, relations between Bulgaria and the USSR were at one time, which is best defined by the following Soviet adage: "A chicken is not a bird and Bulgaria is not abroad".

One of the latest arguments proving Armenia's increasing dependence on Russia is Armenia's vote at the United Nations General Assembly against the UN resolution affirming Ukraine's territorial integrity. Not counting Russia and apart from Armenia, Belarus was the only other post-Soviet country that voted against the resolution. But prior to the vote, Belarus had stated that it doesn't recognize Yanukovitch as president, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko recently met with acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov and basically, with this move, recognized Ukraine's current authorities at an official level. While Yerevan made no official statements or took any actions during the crisis in Ukraine that would be different from Moscow's official position.

It is very often noted in Armenia that Armenia's being "super-pro-Russian" is due to the fact that Russia is the only country that ensures Armenia's security. According to the views of many, if Armenia opposes Russia, it might make the latter angry and lead to Russia reviewing its attitude toward Armenia, which, considering that Armenia is in a state of war with Azerbaijan, might mean that Russia will attack Armenia. That is to say, it is implied that, roughly speaking, it's better to be in a state of complete dependence on Russia than not exist at all.

But this hypothesis leads to several questions. First, it turns out that we have to accept that that which is advantageous for Russia is compulsively advantageous also for Armenia and only Russia decides what is and isn't advantageous for us.

And this means that it's not ruled out that Russia, based on its interests, might oblige us something that is disadvantageous and undesirable, and we have to accept it because we think that Moscow might no longer guarantee our security, as a result of which we will be subject to attack by our enemies and we will perish. But if we are going to be forced to adopt policy that doesn't arise from our interests, then we might likewise perish in this case. Thus, if today, Azerbaijan is our main foreign threat to security, then tomorrow Russia might also become that country.

It is my conviction that it is not Russia but the balance of forces that ensure Armenia's security. Completely "surrendering" to Russia, Armenia loses the opportunity to "play" with the similarities and differences of the interests of Russia and the West, their contradictions, and the competition between them, and to effectively pursue its own interests.

Note, as well, that observations show that for many in Armenia the phrase "our security" means not "the security of our state," but "the security of our community, our ethnicity," which suggests that this can be ensured also within the scope of other states. This is an unconstitutional, anti-state approach that jeopardizes the security of the people.

That's not how it works! The Russian Federation supplies an average of 60% of Europe's energy needs (gas & oil); even higher percentage for certain countries such as Germany at 85%. The pipelines flow in an East to West direction, that is from Russian Federation to EU. The western and southern frontiers of the Russian Federation is increasingly being surrounded by hostile-NATO countries threatening the RF at its borders. Starting from the North (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), going down to Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey, with threats by the West to bring Ukraine and Georgia into its fold, and with it Armenia. The worlds largest oil and gas reserves (more than the entire Middle-east) are located in Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, along the Caspian Sea Basin. The English (led by British Foreign Policy and the US State Department) would like to lift Europe's dependency on the Russian Federation for its Energy needs. The only route to access & control central Asian (Caspian Sea basin) energy bypassing Russia is via Turkey (which acts as corridor) via the Caucasus (Georgia and/or Armenia) and onto Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea basin (Turkmenistan). The pipeline project called Nabucco starts in central EU (Austria) and is on its way to the Caspian basin. Should the Russian Federation allow access via the Caucasus (Georgia & Armenia) to the Brits with their British Petroleum and their US State Department, it would spell disaster to the existence of the Russian Federation. For now, RF has influence, leverage, power over the EU and revenue source. As the RF is encircled on its western frontiers by NATO, under no circumstance would it allow Georgia and Armenia to fall in NATO or EU hands. If so, the RF will be weakened and dismembered. So, Armenia & Georgia are of utmost strategic importance to the Russian Federation. Armenia's geography is also of vital importance to Iran, as it is the shortest and most direct route to Europe (via Georgia's port of Batumi) bypassing any dependency on Turkey. China has an interest to keep the Armenian frontiers remain shut in the face of Western (Brit & US) penetration into Central Asia. China fears that the West will hinder energy pipelines supplies from Central Asia to China, as well as meddle in its Western XinXang province. Keep in mind that the EU & the US have done nothing to invest in Armenia or protect from Turkish & Azeri hostile militarized border blocked. The US has yet to lift a finger to instruct its so-called staunch & secular ally Turkey to lift its economic blockade (preventing Armenia land access across to Europe. Armenia is exactly where it needs to be, for now.

Good posts Berge, but I think NATO would never be able to touch Armenia. Armenia is probably more important to Russia than Georgia. Armenia should use this to gain its own advantages from Russia against both Azerbaijan and Turkey. But unfortunately, I don't know if Armenia has its own capabilities and freedom of thought. Russia it seems loves both Armenia and Azerbaijan pitted against one another while it keeps Turkey in check. This scenario is profitable for both Russia and the west. What we want or what is right seems irrelevant when it comes to their profits.

Looking back on our history, I have found traits our former rulers possessed, and which have trickled down to our oligarchs. Not every Armenian remembers our small kingdom of Commagene. The monarchs of this hellenized Armenian kingdom, remind me of our current day oligarchs. Self serving, building great mansions, just like the Armenian monarchs of the Commagene built gigantic royal sanctuaries at Mount Nemrut, while the majority poor Armenian people lived in abject poverty. And we all know what kind of fate was awaiting Commagene, it crumbled so quick that emperor Vespasian had absolutely no difficulties deposing the last Armenian monarch without a fight and annexing Commagene to Seleucid Syria. Such a fate is awaiting the last parcel of our former greater Armenia. It is Now or Never. We either Help our poor kin, or die without a single fight, just like when Roman emperor Vespasian simply walked into Commagene and annexed it.

Russia understands that if Georgia is allowed to join NATO or the EU, it stands to be effectively surrounded from the Baltic Sea to the Caucasus. On August 8, 2008, in a clear signal to the US State Department and the EU led by the British, the Russian Federation whacked Georgia (which lost Abkhazia and south Ossetia) and got uncomfortably close to the current BTC pipeline (which only supplies less than 1% of Europe’s needs – sort of a prototype). It was that year that the US SD showed sudden interest and concern to Turkey’s border closure with Armenia (after 18 years of silence), that culminated with the signing of the Protocols, and Turkey in turn would open the border (for pipelines – NABUCO project). The only viable route to lay down energy pipelines from Europe, across Turkey acting as a corridor, and on to the Caucasus, are Georgia and Armenia (western gates to the Caucasus) . Georgia is now deemed unreliable and unstable to risk Europe’s energy supplies. The once touted Turkey-corridor from Europe to the Caspian Sea Basin and on to Central Asia’s enormous gas reserves is a dead-end energy corridor without open borders with Armenia. Thus, the US SD applies all sorts of pressure to crush Armenians and force Armenia to capitulate to Turkey’s demands. Simultaneously, the British and the US SD are engaged in depopulating the undesirable Armenians from Georgia’s Javakh region as they are located on the way of secure energy pipeline routes. With Georgia deemed precarious and unreliable to risk Europe’s energy supply route, Azerbaijan is landlocked from the West and thus cannot exports its gas and oil to Western markets. Azerbaijan’s safest and most reliable route to the West is via Armenia. As long as the US State Department continues to follow the wrong policies towards Armenia, Artzakh, and Javakh – there will not be US access and control of Central Asia’s oil & gas reserves. The Chinese are already tapping to the same resources. No restorative justice (land, reparation, restitution) to Armenia -> No energy pipelines to the West.

it is totally silly and unwise not supporting Russia specially current politics of Putin. It is obvious that no state in the world is totally independent and Armenia is no exception of that but for general terms of current status quo the best friend of Armenia is and it will be Russia if we want to prosper and economically saying touch a level important in the future. Revise Georgia hostile attitude towards Armenian population in Javaketi and and obvious artificial Azeri state pogroms and eventually war leads you to trust Russia unconditionally . USA and UK have no real state politics their movements are based on oil and oil no matter in what condition they receive it .
