Cyprus Says It Has Sent Offshore Documents as Requested by Armenia's Prosecutor General
The Cyprus General Prosecutor’s Office has informed Hetq that it has responded to an official petition for assistance made by it counterpart in Armenia regarding the offshore financial scandal implicating Armenia’s former Prime Minister and the Locum Tenens of the Ararat Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The names of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and Archbishop Navasard Kjoyan appear on a registry document of a company registered in Cyprus to which large amounts of cash from bank loans were funneled.
Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s Office contacted Cypriot law enforcement last December requesting additional documentation regarding the companies involved so that they could be submitted for the preliminary examination ongoing in Armenia and to verify whether the signatures of the former prime minister and locum tenens are genuine.
On April 12, the Nyut.am website in Armenia reported, according to a source, that the findings of the forensic examination of the signatures had been conveyed to President Sargsyan.
The website speculates that the findings had something to do with the unexpected resignation of Tigran Sargsyan since they were made know to the president on the same day that the prime minister resigned.
