Heritage Party VP on Rule of Law: "I can announce that I'm the Sultan of Brunei. So what?"

Heritage Party Vice President Armen Martirosyan dismissed the notion that the Rule of Law (Orinats Yerkir) party would garner supporters from the opposition electorate in Armenia just because it has announced that it is pulling out of the ruling government coalition.

Martirosyan argued that voters wouldn’t be so easily convinced that Rule of Law had changed its stripes over night and would now operate in opposition to the new government being formed under Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan.

“Fine, they left the coalition. But it’s not like anything has changed. I can come out and announce that I’m the Sultan of Brunei; so what?” Martirosyan said.

The Heritage Party official said that the real reason Rule of Law left the coalition was due to the crisis with the ruling authorities.

“Their announcement refers to this. There is precious little to divvy up in Armenia and this has led to the crisis. I also think that the expectations of Rule of Law were never fulfilled in terms of representation, of having a voice,” Martirosyan said.

When asked if there was a chance that Heritage could possibly cooperate with Rule of Law now that it is no longer in the coalition, Martirosyan said that his party hasn’t discussed the issue as yet.

“If they broach the issue with us, naturally, we would have to discuss it,” Martirosyan said.

He gave the same answer when I asked about the possibility of the current opposition quartet (Heritage, ANC, Prosperous Armenia and ARF) accepting Rule of Law into the fold.

“If they file such a request we will review it and make a decision,” said Martirosyan.
