Pashinyan on Traffic Violations: 'Will you fine the prime minister, president or catholicos?'

Armenian National Congress (HAK) MP Nikol Pashinyan took the floor during a parliamentary debate today on traffic safety and violations and stated that 11 billion AMD (US$26.5 million) in traffic fines had been issued in the last two years based on violations caught by speed cameras.

Pashinyan said that as a result the Security Dream Ltd. and its shadowy backers had benefitted to the tune of $14 million. (Security Dream signed a 25 year contract with the Armenian police for the installation, operation and maintenance of a road traffic control system.)

Pashinyan questioned government claims that speed cameras have reduced traffic deaths in Armenia, arguing that the police had modified its system for registering such deaths and that its statistics couldn’t be trusted.

The HAK MP said that all must be treated equally when it comes to obeying traffic rules and regulations, and claimed that yesterday he saw the prime minister’s car violate a traffic law.

“So will you issue the prime minister a fine? And it’s not just Hovik Abrahamyan, but the president, the catholicos and others. They drive like they own the road.”
