Armenian Defense Minister:'Latest Azerbaijani Infiltration Into Karvatchar Probably Not the First'

At today’s Armenian government cabinet session, Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan today affirmed that Azerbajani units had most likely infiltrated the Karvatchar (Kelbajar) region of Artsakh before last week’s incident was exposed.

The defense minister acknowledged that the ministry had received periodic reports from the Artsakh Defense Army about finding traces of such units in the area in the past.

Ohanyan assured the government that the ministry, in collaboration with security and army units, had tracked down the remnants of the latest group to infiltrate the border and had captured one of its members.

Ohanyan added that additional army units had been sent to the region to beef up security and to allay the fears of the local Armenian populace.

Surprisingly, Ohanyan said these fears were based on ‘preliminary’ reports that a 17 year-old Armenian from the Karvatchar region had been captured and killed by the Azerbaijani unit.

In fact, the young man has already been buried and interviews with family members leave no doubt that the Azerbaijani saboteurs were responsible for capturing and torturing Smbat Tsakanyan.

The defense minister concluded by assuring the cabinet that all necessary steps are being taken to rule out such an incident in the future.
