No Final Date on Armenia's Accession to Eurasian Union: Head of Ruling Faction Says PM Only Guessing

Though Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan said yesterday that Armenia will become a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) on January 1, 2015, head of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia parliamentary faction Vahram Baghdasaryan, in a conversation with Hetq, urged not to talk about the final deadline for accession and to be patient.

"There's no talk of a final deadline — neither January 1 nor October 1. Be patient for a few days, for some time. The presidents will meet in the summer, and there will be a final decision only at that time. All other timelines are speculation," he told Hetq.

To this correspondent's comment that it was the country's prime minister who made the statement and whether he too is making assumptions, Baghdasaryan said: "Well, yes, Hovik Abrahamyan also expressed an opinion — he didn't say the day and time of accession. I too can now believe that the issue will be resolved byJanuary 1 because the matter of the documents is completed on our end; the agreements were sent to the three states, which will state their position at the meeting. We did that which was to have been done on our side — the Armenian side fulfilled all its obligations."

Recall, the Armenian prime minister yesterday said in particular: "I said that we will sign the documents for accession to the EEU by the end of October. This is a process, which we will conclude in September, October. I am convinced that we will become a full member of the Eurasian Economic Union by January 1, 2015."

Hetq inquired as to whether Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will discuss the matter of EEU membership at tomorrow's meeting of the Republican Party of Armenia's Executive Body. Baghdasaryan said he cannot answer that question at this time because the meeting agenda is determined at the meeting.

He said, instead, it's possible that Sargsyan will give an assessment of Abrahamyan's first 100 days in office. "The man worked for 100 days. It's possible for Sargsyan to address [this]. What he'll say, I don't know, but I myself can say it's not possible to assess a person's work in 100 days," he added.
