Armenian Government Reinstates Much Maligned Khachatryan as Syunik Governor
Sourik Khachatryan, who temporarily resigned as the Provincial Governor of Syunik in the summer of 2013, after being embroiled in a deadly shooting incident occurred near his home in Goris, was today reinstated to the position by the Armenian government.
In the June 1 shooting, an Artskah Army commander was seriously wounded and his brother killed.
Two days later, after widespread negative public reaction, Khachatryan said he would be temporarily stepping down to await the findings of an investigation.
“I regret that I could not prevent the tragic incident that occurred near my house. Now, all questions will be given an objective examination,” Khachatryan declared at the time.
Criminal charges were later filed against the Tigran Khachatryan, Sourik Khachatryan’s son and bodyguard Zarzand Nikoghosyan, in connection with the incident.
In September 2014, Armenia’s Investigative Unit of the Ministry of Defense dropped all criminal proceedings against the two, arguing that they acted in self-defense and within the bounds of the law.
