Haykadzor Gets Renovated Community Center; Residents Complain about Railway Station Closing

Mariam Khalatyan

Following a top bottom renovation, the community center in Haykadzor (an Armenian village near the Turkish border in Shirak Province) reopened to the public on September 26.

The center will house the municipality office and a health station.

The center’s renovation cost 22.8 million AMD (US$55,800). 12.9 million AMD was allocated by Counterpart International, 7 million by Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, and 3 million by the Shirak Provincial Government. . The 600,000 AMD shortfall will gradually be paid by the Haykadzor Municipality.

Shirak Provincial Governor Feliks Tsolakyan, who was present at the reopening ceremony, said he was glad to see such improvements being made in a border village.

Given that local residents rarely see a high ranking official in their midst, villagers crowded round Tsolakyan to voice a litany of concerns. Tsolakyan responded that he was aware of the community’s problems and promised that some, not all, would be resolved.

Haykadzor resident Sasha Yeghoyan pointed out the terrible condition on the road leading to the village.

“That 3-4 kilometer road is a mess. 23 years have passed and we’ve seen a number of mayors, but the problem persists,” Yeghoyan told Hetq.

Residents also complained that due to last year’s decision by the South Caucasus Railway to close the station in neighboring Bagravan, they are forced to transport their goods to Gyumri (the provincial capital) in the one daily minivan that services five communities.

Tsolakyan told residents that he had contacted railway management and was told it was not cost effective to keep the Bagrevan station open.
