Georgian Prez Tiptoes Around 1915 Genocide Issue: National “Coexistence” More Important

During a November 21 meeting between Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili and representatives of organizations in the Georgian National Minorities Council, a representative of an organization called the Armenian Community of Georgia asked Margvelashvili if he would make a public statement to the effect that Georgia officially “shares the pain” of the country’s Armenians regarding the 1915 Genocide.

Margvelashvili replied that the Georgian authorities have always stood by all of its citizens and that they approach the emotions and concerns of all the country’s national grouping with great care.

This is what he had to say:

Our approach is that we provide an equal opportunity to all national groupings to develop. Our standard is such that any one of the national groupings should not have less of a chance than the Georgians. In addition, regarding such an issue, Georgia plays a large role in the entire region. We must admit that all national groupings in Georgia get along very well. This fact is a part of the tradition and culture at the foundation of Georgian culture.

Based on all of this, we deal with these emotions and issues with great care. Our main aim is to continue the harmonious coexistence in our marvelous country.

The Armenian organization representative also asked Margvelashvili about the restoration of Georgian citizenship to those who had renounced it in the past.

The meeting was attended also attended by Ucha Nanuashvili, Georgia’s Human Rights Ombudsman, and Sofio Shamidi, an advisor to the Georgian president on national minority issues.
