Walnut Lovers Beware: Gyumri Price Hits $28.45 a Kilo

If you’re shopping for shelled walnuts as appetizers for your holiday table, stay away from markets in Gyumri.

A month ago shoppers could purchase one kilo of the shelled nuts for 10,000 dram (US$18.97) a kilo. Today, they’re selling from 12,000 ($22.76) – 15,000 dram ($28.45).

A devalued Armenian Dram has led to retail price hikes of several food items.

Bread prices have also inched up in the past few days – from 130 drams a loaf to 150. Staff at a local supermarket told me they were willing to decrease the price of the staple if flour prices went down.

In fact, flour prices have dropped somewhat. A 50 kilo bag shot up from 12-14,000 dram to 20,000 just in the past two days. Today, you can purchase one for 18,000.

A kilo of sugar today averaged from 490 to 550 drams (US 93 cents - $1.04).

The price of beef at the markets has remained the same these past few days averaging 2,200 drams per kilo.

String cheese, a favorite in Gyumri, remains priced at an average of 2,500 – 3,500 dram. A cheese vendor I met joked, “Our cheese has nothing to do with the dollar.”

According to our information, two large diary producers - Igit and Van - in Shirak Province –– haven’t raised their prices due to the weakening Armenian Dram.

Locally grown vegetable greens (parsley, dill, coriander, etc.) also haven’t gone up in price. Bunches are still available from 100 - 150 dram.

Walnuts @ 12,000 a kilo? Do not buy, Walnuts are not essential to life, price will soon come down drastically.
