Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has called for a thorough investigation of last week’s murders in Gyumri at a meeting he held today in Yerevan with Alexandr Bastrikin, President of Russia’s Investigative Committee who has arrived for consultations regarding the prosecution of the case.

Sargsyan emphasized that the joint cooperative process agreed to by the two nations must continue its productive measures and lead to a logical conclusion, this according to an official communique issued by the Armenian government.

During the meeting, Bastrikin noted that the legal teams of the two nations have reached a clear understanding of the role of Armenian law enforcement regarding its assistance in the investigation of the case and gave his assurances that both sides are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

Many in Armenia have demanded that the investigation be spearheaded by Armenian law enforcement bodies and that the main suspect in the killings, Russian soldier Valery Permyakov, be handed over to Armenian jurisdiction.
