Armenian President Congratulates Yezidi Community on Their New Year

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan today congratulated the Yezidi community of Armenia on the occasion of their New Year.

“The genuine friendship of the Armenian and Yezidi peoples has passed through a joint struggle of time and shared calamities and has been strengthened with peaceful, creative work and shared achievements,” Sargsyan said in his public message.

Sargsyan's congratulatory message concludes:

“The last year was difficult for many Yezidis living in the Middle East, and they still continue to experience hardships. Be confident that we are standing beside you in this difficult situation and you can expect our support in the future. Melek Taus brings with it new hopes and dreams. Thus, I yearn for our region to be peaceful and safe in the New Year and that severe adversities remain in the past. Happy New Year and all the best to you dear Yezidi compatriots

(Known as Sere Sal (meaning “Head of the Year”), New Year is celebrated on a particular Wednesday of April, known as Red Wednesday. This day commemorates the Wednesday that Tawsi Melek (Peacock Angel) first came to Earth millions of years ago in order to calm the planet’s quaking and spread his peacock colors throughout the world. Part of the New Year celebration is the coloring of eggs, which collectively represent Tawsi Melek’s rainbow colors that he blessed the world with and displays in his form of the Peacock Angel. The eggs are principally colored red, blue, green and yellow. Women also place blood-red flowers and shells of the colored eggs above the doors of the Yezidis so that Tawsi Melek can recognize their abodes.)
