Armenian Prime Minister: 'There are forces at Baghramyan Avenue seeking to foment instability'

Hovik Abrahamyan questions motives of protesters; warns against provoking police

In a post written by Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, and circulated by his press secretary in Facebook, Abrahamyan claims that “forces have gathered at Baghramyan Avenue whose real aim isn’t to raise the issue of the electricity rate hike but to foment instability in the country and clashes amongst citizens.”

Abrahamyan writes that these forces have pushed “incomprehensible and near-sighted political agendas to the fore, and not the issue’s social or economic component.”

The prime minister argues that such a conclusion is evident given that just the other day the president of Armenia not only presented a detailed analysis of the present energy sector, substantiations for the rate hike, but also that the rate hike will be subjected to an international audit and that the government would assume the entire rate increase in the meantime.

(Hetq – the rate hike is scheduled to take effect as of August 1)

Abrahamyan goes on to say that his government has expressed its willingness to include experts and members of civil society in this process.

“Given this, the decision by the protesters to close Baghramyan Avenue in such an illegal fashion is unfathomable especially since the movement’s initiating group (“No to Plunder”-Hetq) has declared that the protest would continue in Liberty Square,” Abrahamyan writes.

The prime minister then lauds the “No to Plunder” group for doing the rational thing in the best interests of the society and state once it received a positive response from the president.

Abrahamyan then calls on the Baghramyan Avenue protesters to refrain from “anti-constitutional acts and not to agitate the situation.”

“At the same time, I regard any provocations against the police as unacceptable. They serve our country and people and are worthy of utmost respect,” Abrahamyan concludes.

Mr. Prime Minister it is time for you to resign, and go after your beezeenesses! Armenians don't want the Repetition of March 2008, unless you provoke them!
