Yerevan Police Detain Protester Claiming He Was Calling for "Armed Action"

Yerevan Police have issued a statement claiming that last night at 11:50 they and protesters in Liberty Square detained a person making calls for an armed action and who resisted the efforts of police in carrying out their duties.

After being taken to the Kentron Police Station, the man is said to have been identified as Aram Hakobyan.

Police say they are investigating the matter.

Note to readers: Yesterday evening Armenia Police Chief Vladimir Kasparyan issued a 30 minute deadline for electricity rate hike protesters to leave Baghramyan Avenue, otherwise threatening to move in and using force, if needed, to disperse the crowd of several thousands. Representatives of the “No to Plunder” movement advised protesters to heed the police chief’s call and some in the crowd moved down the street to Opera’s Liberty Square. A majority of the protesters stood their ground. The deadline came and went and the police did not take any steps to disperse the crowd.
