No Reply from Ministry; Noubarashen Inmates Resume Hunger Strike

Fifty inmates serving life sentences at Armenia’s Noubarashen Correctional Facility have resumed their hunger strike after not hearing a response to their demands from the ministry of justice.

The inmates had declared an open ended hunger strike on October 12 demanding a review of their legal cases.

They had handed a ten point petition, addressed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, to the head of the Noubarashen penitentiary.

The inmates temporarily called off their hunger strike on October 16 after officials at the presidential palace informed them that the petition had been forwarded to the justice ministry and told them to wait one month for a reply.

“The one month is up. We and the other relatives haven’t received any response from the justice ministry. This is the reason why they have decided to resume the hunger strike,” a relative of one of the inmates told Hetq by phone.
