Lifers at Noubarashen Penitentiary Renew Hunger Strike: Demand Case Review

Some forty inmates serving life sentences at Armenia’s Noubarashen Penitentiary renewed their hunger strike yesterday, according to their relatives.

Attempting to verify the news, Hetq contacted the Department of Corrections at the Ministry of Justice and we were told that 28 petitions had been received by inmates regarding a declaration of the hunger strike. (It seems that in Armenia, prison officials must be informed in advance of any hunger strike)

Relatives told Hetq that the inmates were renewing their hunger strike since prison officials never responded to their list of ten demands presented in October.

It was on October 12 that some fifty inmates went on hunger strike at Noubarashen demanding that their cases be reviewed.

The ten point petition was addressed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and other officials.
