President Serzh Sargsyan visited today Metzamot, Armenia's nuclear power plant.

Sargsyan toured the plant, familiarized himself with the current works and the results of last year's   production, as well as with the progress of the first phase in the works aimed at the extension of the operation cycle of the second power generating unit.

Power plant management provided Sargsyan information about progress made in the first phase of the works conducted to extend the operation cycle of the second power generating unit for another ten years.

The credits and grants for the implementation of these activities have been provided by the Government of the Russian Federation. The President was informed that the process of examining the systems, apparatus and structures has already begun and will be concluded in September, 2016. Afterwards, a decision will be made on the extension of the operation cycle of the second power generating unit.

According to the Metzamor management, based on the conducted research, it is envisaged in the second phase to carry out the works on the replacement of equipment and apparatus. Meanwhile, necessary measures will be taken to upgrade the safety level of the plant.
