Armenian President Visits “Armenian” Watertown to Start U.S. Visit
On March 28, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan began his working visit to the United States of America.
In Massachusetts, Sargsyan visited Watertown, which has many Armenian residents. President Sargsyan first visited the Armenian Library-Museum of America, founded in 1971. The Museum is an important structure which presents Armenian cultural heritage – coins, articles made of ceramics, pottery, carpets, religious articles, stamps, textile, metal work, maps, printed works and a rich collection of medieval miniatures. Sargsyan toured the premise of the library and conversed with the staff about its activities. The Armenian president donated a picture of the French-Armenian painter Hovhannes "Jean" Semerdjian (Jean Jansem) to the museum.
Serzh Sargsyan then visited the Baikar Center of Ramgavar Liberal Party and Hairenik Center of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.
The Hairenik Center of Boston is the oldest Armenian center on the east coast. The center houses the headquarters of the Armenian Relief Society, Hairenik radio station, and the editorial staffs of the Armenian Weekly and Hairenik Weekly papers. The ARF party archives are also kept here
On the first day of his U.S. visit, President Sargsyan also visited the Armenian churches of Saint Stepanos (St. Stephen’s) in Watertown and Holy Trinity in Cambridge.
