Artsakh - Lives Left Behind

By Eric Grigorian

Things change on the border - advances are made, retreats are forced, territories are gained and lost. No lives are ever gained though, only lost. And not much is gained for those whose lives were left behind. Abandoned tea pots, beds collecting dust, withering plants, laundry still hanging. There are those who chose to stay, or had no place to go, passing their days going through the motions of “life.” A lot happens on these front lines, things distant from view. Life in these bordering towns - in Martakert, Mataghis and Talish - continues in the aftermath since April 2nd - although a lot more anxiously and more uncertain of tomorrow. It’s a long way from nowhere for most, but somewhere for those whose lives as they knew it were left behind.

News always think in terms of machinery lost and yardage gained, but Seldom in terms of the people whose lives are changed forever. Thank you for turning the camera onto the most important element in the story, the people.
