German Parliament Approves Armenian Genocide Resolution
Germany’s parliament today approved a resolution calling the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks a’ genocide’.
“The Armenians’ fate is exemplary of the history of mass destruction, ethnic cleansing, expulsion and genocide that has marked the 20th century in such a terrible way,” said the resolution, which also notes what it calls Germany’s complicit silence at the time and the singular nature of the Holocaust.
Chancellor Angela Merkel was not in the Bundestag for the vote. Her Christian Democrats (CDU), their coalition partners the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens all supported the resolution, and the vote in favor was overwhelming.
