Aviation Group Demands a Halt to Partial Dismantling of Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan

Armenia’s “National Aviation Union” (NAU), in a public statement, has called for the halt of the partial demolition of Terminal 1 at Zvartnots International Airport.

Terminal 1, built in 1971 and closed in 2011, is known for its circular structure that housed a control tower inside.

The NAU argues that Armenia is in a war footing and that the country can ill afford to dismantle such structures of strategic significance.

The NAU says that the decision to partially dismantle the Zvartnots complex clearly violates various clauses of Armenia’s military doctrine, labeling the decision of the Public Council “a conspiratorial blow to body of the Armenian people at the most difficult of times for our country”.

The organization calls for an investigation into this crime against state property and that those responsible be held accountable.

Dear H. or whatever your name is! You can call me names if that makes you happy. But that is not going to change the reality, the fact that the terminal is useless! I am a structural engineer, so my judgement is based on years of education and experience. Nevertheless, you don't need much experience or even education to know that many of the Soviet structures in Armenia can be extremely dangerous in case of a new earthquake. A few years ago, I came across a paper about the frequent use of precast concrete elements in midrise and high-rise residential buildings in Gyumri. Even freshmen in US universities know that precast structures are not meant for seismically active zones, so how on earth did the Soviet engineers let their use in Gyumri is simply beyond my understanding!! This is not about sentimentality, it is about millions of dollars that need to be invested to make that structure safe. Who is going to spend that money? Mr. Eurnekian? Why? You think he is God or Jesus?! No, the Soviet times are gone. In a capitalist system money can only be spent on something that is considered some sort of investment.

Dear minas, your argumentation is clear and very simple. The old building maybe is not so well, from functional point of view. However, by such logic you can kill your grandmother also - as per as she also have functioning ,,not so well,, and she has no perspective for long live!

I am all for keeping and protecting architecturally significant buildings, I believe that the owners have looked at many options but the design layout is absolutely useless for anything practical. The NAU's reasons for keeping the structure does not make any sense at all.

Since when old terminals are considered to be structures of strategic significance??!! There are people in Armenia who simply want to criticize and sometimes they don't even know what are they talking about. The new terminal is operational. It is modern, efficient, clean and seismic-resistant. These are the things that the old terminal, a soviet structure built per soviet standards did not and does not have. I first saw it more than 10 years ago and was embarrassed that that was the main international hub for an entire country. We are all grateful to Mr. Eurnekian that unlike Armenian oligarchs does not invest his money in buying mansions in California instead invests in his homeland, and the airport is only one example of what he has done. I only wish we had 20 or 30 Eurnekians instead of one! A perfect example of Soviet engineering failure was the earthquake in Gyumri which resulted in the death of some 25000 people, a similar earthquake in Japan will have a few dozen casualties or maybe even less. That terminal is in fact some sort of burden. In case of a new earthquake, it will most probably collapse and will cause serious damage which might disrupt the normal operation of the whole airport. If you really want to be taken seriously, ask an independent European consulting firm to make a rehabilitation report for that terminal and you will see how much money it will cost to seismically retrofit that huge structure and after that you will have an old dysfunctional structure that, to put it mildly, is useless.
