Hunger Strike to Continue, Says Jailed Activist Andreas Ghukasyan

Diana Ghazaryan

Andreas Ghukasyan, a member of the Anti-Crisis Committee set up during the protests surrounding the seizure of a Yerevan police building by the armed Sasna Dzrer group, is still on hunger strike.

Ghukasyan, now being held in the Nubarashen Correctional Facilty, has been on hunger strike for the past four days. Ghukasyan, a member of the “Rise Armenia” civic initiative was attacked by a group of unidentified individuals on July 29 during a clash between protesters and law enforcement in Yerevan’s Sari Tagh neighborhood.

Ghukasyan was then detained on suspicion of organizing public unrest. A court has said that he could be detained for 72 hours. Lusineh Sahakyan, Ghukasyan’s lawyer, says her client’s health condition has worsened and that he needs an in-depth medical evaluation.

According to Sahakyan, Ghukasyan doesn’t plan to end his hunger strike.

Mr. Ghukasyan appears to be one of the more methodical, resolute and consistent individuals involved in the struggle for social and political development in Armenia. If the regime of Mr. Serge Sargsyan has any idea of what is gradually descending upon them, they will not only set people like Mr. Ghukasyan free but will facilitate some form of discourse within the society through these individuals. If it is not too late already!
