Memorial Honoring Monte Melkonian to Take Place in Burbank

A memorial honoring Armenian national hero Monte Melkonian will take place on December 4, 2011, at the Zorayan museum, Western Diocese in Burbank

Los Angeles, CA – A program celebrating the life and legacy of famed Armenian commander Monte Melkonian will take place on Sunday, December 4, 2011, on the occasion of what would have been his 54th birthday.

Monte, a California native, was an intellectual and a freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the national-liberation struggle of the Armenian nation. He played a key role in the liberation of a part of Armenia - Artsakh - and was awarded the title of National Hero of the Republic of Armenia.

Among the speakers of the event will be Professor Markar Melkonian, brother of Monte and author of “My Brother’s Road: An American’s Fateful Journey to Armenia.” Joining the program via Skype will be Seta Melkonian, Monte’s wife; Dr. Armen Ayvazyan, a historian and political scientist; General Hmayak Haroyan, Monte’s military companion in Artsakh and a renowned general in the Armenian armed forces; and government officials of the liberated Kashatagh region of Artsakh.

The event will offer an exhibit which will include Monte’s personal items and letters, as well as photos of ancient Armenian monuments in Armenia’s liberated territory. The event will commence at 6:00 PM and is free to the public. Zorayan museum is located at 3325 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, CA 91504.

The event is organized by the “Hayrenaser” organization, which has a mission to contribute to the preservation and development of Armenia’s independent statehood by identifying and addressing critical challenges.

We won Artsakh and we are rebuilding Armenia. Yerevan is a much better place now, than it was five years ago, and will be an even better place five years from now. We have relative democracy, rule of law and freedom of the press. If Monte was here today, I am confident that he would be struggling for a better future and would be optimistic about about it.

Hero yah, for what look at what happened to Armenia, most of them are emigrating to Russia, the girls are working in Turkey or Dubai, most of the population living below poverty line, yes we won Artsakh, but we lost Yerevan,in 20 years we lost 1 milion due to migration, another 20 years another milion, what left 1 milion, average age 70 go figure, it is not in Armenian DNA to govern themself, look at our history, Romans, Arabs, Persians, Turks, and now the Russians, we do not deserve indipandance, A Jew once said, watch out of one Armenian, if there is two of them don't worry, the two will destroy each other. Poor Monte, if he saw the situation in Armenia now he will cry in his grave, by the way forget about another Monte coming along, then we did not know any better, now we see afther 20 years the end result.
