Armenian Prime Minister Issues Directives: One Deals with Nepotism in School Hiring

Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan issued a number of ‘directives’ to subordinates at today’s cabinet session.

Of interest was a directive to the education minister, requesting that within seven days he come up with proposals designed to lessen the occurrence of favoritism when it comes to appointing employees at public schools.

Karapetyan inferred that in some schools more than one family member is on the payroll, which could lead to a conflict of interest.

“What am I talking about? A mother and her daughter are working at the same school. I don’t rule out that such a situation can exist, but we must differentiate whether this is based on objective rather than subjective factors,” Karapetyan said.

The prime minister pointed out that agencies in the social security sector must make their services more accessible to the public.

Karapetyan called on the labor and social affairs minister to present proposals so that parents could apply for child support online. He also stressed the need to simplify the process of applying for pensions and social assistance, making it possible to apply at any regional agency regardless of the applicant’s registered address.

Karapetyan also focused on the need of promoting public sport and a healthy lifestyle at the regional level.

He instructed the minister of sport and youth affairs to draft a study of how to more efficiently utilize budgetary resources when it comes to organizing sports events on the regional level.

The prime minister said there might be the need to draft a national program regarding sports.

Finally, Karapetyan called on state agencies to work more openly with the media and to periodically inform the public as to the work being carried out by the government.
